Background of the Study

Pesticides play a crucial role in modern agriculture, enhancing crop yield and controlling pests. However, improper pesticide handling and application can lead to serious health hazards, including respiratory diseases, skin disorders, and neurological problems (WHO, 2024). In many developing regions, including Jigawa State, farmers often lack adequate knowledge of pesticide safety measures, leading to excessive exposure and long-term health complications.

Despite government and non-governmental efforts to educate farmers on pesticide safety, many still apply pesticides without protective gear, store chemicals improperly, and use unsafe disposal methods (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024). Addressing these challenges through effective pesticide safety education is essential to protecting farmers' health.

This study investigates the impact of pesticide safety education on farmers’ health in Jigawa State, assessing whether increased awareness translates into safer pesticide use and reduced health risks.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the availability of guidelines for safe pesticide use, cases of pesticide-related illnesses remain high among farmers in Jigawa State (Adepoju & Salami, 2024). Many farmers lack formal education on pesticide safety, leading to excessive exposure and associated health issues. The effectiveness of existing pesticide safety education programs in improving farmers' knowledge and health outcomes remains uncertain.

This study aims to evaluate how pesticide safety education influences farmers' health and identify barriers to effective implementation.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of awareness of pesticide safety measures among farmers in Jigawa State.
  2. To evaluate the impact of pesticide safety education on farmers’ health.
  3. To identify challenges affecting the implementation of pesticide safety education programs.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of awareness of pesticide safety among farmers in Jigawa State?
  2. How does pesticide safety education influence farmers’ health?
  3. What challenges hinder the success of pesticide safety education programs?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Pesticide safety education has no significant impact on farmers’ knowledge of pesticide handling.
  2. There is no significant relationship between pesticide safety education and improved health outcomes.
  3. Implementation challenges do not significantly affect the effectiveness of pesticide safety education programs.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on farmers across rural and semi-urban areas in Jigawa State, examining the effectiveness of pesticide safety education programs. Limitations include variations in farming practices, economic constraints, and access to protective equipment.

Definitions of Terms

  • Pesticide Safety Education: Training programs designed to educate farmers on the safe use and handling of pesticides.
  • Farmers' Health: The physical well-being of individuals involved in agricultural activities, particularly concerning pesticide exposure.
  • Pesticide Exposure: Contact with pesticide chemicals through inhalation, ingestion, or skin absorption.
